Okay, so earlier acidrogue submitted to me this website that featuring info onSailor Tattoos. It is a wordpress site, which is kind of like a blog, but also kind of different, and I was skeptical at first because things like this have popped up before and have turned out to be fan created to try and create proof.
But I’ve been going through the site for a while, and looking into this whole thing. and well… it’s just not like anything like that I don’t think. There are facebook and twitter pages and a store, and it’s just not something that I see being posted by any kind of fan. It was also posted on December 14 2011. Before either of them got any tattoos.
Here is another link to the same batch of pictures and written by the same guy, just posted on a different site, and posted on December 19, 2011.
Here are a few of the tattoos featured on the site:
A Sparrow or a Swallow tattoo goes to a sailor for every 5,000 nautical miles they travel–a swallow because it can always find its way home.
(on the left arm too I just)
A Full-Rigged Ship displays that a sailor has been around Cape Horn.
A Nautical Star or Compass Rose was traditionally given so that a sailor could always find his or her way home.
A Rope tattooed around the wrist suggests a sailor is or was a deckhand.
Now, this /could/ be entirely a coincidence. But to be honest… this is a weirdcoincidence if it is one.. if it’s not, I think it’s quite clear that they were deliberate. And based on the butterfly and it is what it is, we know that they’ve done delibereately matching tattoos like that before…
So really, this is just something that is really really interesting, and I’m glad someone pointed it out lol.
